When Does the Tahoe Ski Season Start and End?
Tahoe's season has soft edges. Most resorts run from late fall into mid-spring, but the opening and closing weeks move every year with the snowpack.
The short version, and the one worth planning around: most Tahoe resorts open mid-to-late November and close mid-April, and strong snow years stretch runs into May or beyond.
Everything past that sentence is a resort-by-resort, year-by-year negotiation with the weather. No resort commits to a date until it's confident it can hold it, and in the opening weeks "open" usually means a couple of lifts and a couple of runs rather than the mountain you see on the trail map.
The two exceptions worth knowing
Mt. Rose tends to open among the earliest in the basin. Its base sits high enough that early snow holds instead of melting off between storms.
At the other end, Palisades Tahoe has operated into late June or July in exceptional years, including 2017 and 2023. Those are outliers reported after the fact, not a schedule you can book against.
Where the lifts start highest
Base elevation is the best structural clue about which mountains hold snow at either end of the season, because the bottom of the hill is where cover fails first.
| Resort | Base elevation | Summit elevation |
|---|---|---|
| Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe | 8,260 ft | 9,700 ft |
| Kirkwood | 7,800 ft | 9,800 ft |
| Boreal Mountain Resort | 7,200 ft | 7,700 ft |
| Donner Ski Ranch | 7,031 ft | 7,781 ft |
| Sugar Bowl | 6,883 ft | 8,383 ft |
| Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Resort | 6,750 ft | 7,350 ft |
| Diamond Peak | 6,700 ft | 8,540 ft |
| Soda Springs | 6,700 ft | 7,352 ft |
| Sierra-at-Tahoe | 6,640 ft | 8,852 ft |
| Heavenly Mountain Resort | 6,540 ft | 10,067 ft |
| Northstar California | 6,330 ft | 8,610 ft |
| Homewood Mountain Resort | 6,230 ft | 7,880 ft |
| Palisades Tahoe | 6,200 ft | 9,050 ft |
Elevation is a tendency, not a schedule. Opening and closing depend on each season's snowpack and each resort's own operations, and this table says nothing about which lifts are turning today.
Season dates FAQ
When does the Tahoe ski season start?
Most resorts open mid-to-late November. A high-base mountain can get going earlier in a good year, and a lean fall pushes everyone later.
When does it end?
Mid-April for most of the basin, with runs stretching into May or beyond after a strong winter.
Can I ski in Tahoe in May?
Sometimes, at a shrinking handful of mountains, on limited terrain. Treat it as a bonus rather than a plan, and check what's actually spinning before you commit travel to it.
What about summer skiing?
Palisades Tahoe has operated into late June or July in exceptional years like 2017 and 2023. That's the whole honest answer. Don't build a July trip around it.
Is opening weekend worth it?
It's a great day if you live nearby and want the season to start. It's a poor use of a trip you flew or drove hours for, because open terrain is usually a small fraction of the mountain.
