Spring Skiing in Tahoe: April and Beyond
Spring in Tahoe trades a shrinking mountain for softer snow, longer days, and cheaper everything. It's a good deal if you plan around what's closing.
What spring actually gives you
Late season is the friendliest skiing of the year for anyone who isn't chasing powder. The snow is soft, the light is long, there's space in the parking lots, and the whole basin relaxes. Lodging and tickets are usually easier on the wallet than any midwinter week.
The cost is that the season is ending unevenly around you. Terrain closes from the bottom up and from the sunny side in, lift schedules shorten, and the trail map becomes increasingly aspirational.
Where the snow lasts longest
Two structural things decide which mountains still have something to ski late in the season: how high the terrain sits, and how much snow fell on it over the winter. High terrain runs colder and holds its pack. A mountain with a big annual average went into spring with more to lose.
Neither guarantees anything about a particular April. They're simply the right things to bet on when you're deciding where to point the car.

Elevation and long-run snowfall are proxies for a longer season, not a schedule. Most resorts close mid-April and strong snow years stretch runs into May or beyond; Palisades Tahoe has operated into late June or July in exceptional years like 2017 and 2023. How to plan a spring day
- Go early after a hard freeze and later after a warm night. The window where the surface is soft but not soup is the entire game.
- Expect a shorter lift day. Reduced spring operating hours are normal, not a sign something's wrong.
- Ski the sunny aspects through the softening window and move to the shade afterward.
- Layer down. It can be genuinely warm at the base and still winter on the summit.
- Check what's open before you commit to the drive. A mountain that's technically open may be running a fraction of its lifts.
