The month the mountain is still opening

December is one of the bigger months on the snowfall chart, which is genuinely good news. What the chart can't show you is that December snow is doing a different job than midwinter snow. It's building the base rather than adding to one.

Resorts open terrain as coverage allows, a run at a time. Early in the month you may find a handful of lifts and the frontside groomers. After a couple of storm cycles the map can look like a different mountain. In a slow start, it doesn't.

What actually skis well in early winter

Set your expectations to match what's likely to be open:

• Groomed frontside runs. They open first because they take the least snow to cover.
• Beginner and intermediate terrain, which is usually lower angle and fills in sooner.
• Terrain parks, which resorts can build with machine-made snow before the natural pack arrives.
• Not, as a rule: steep chutes, tree runs, and anything with rocks under it. Early-season cover hides hazards and thins fast between storms.

The mountains that start highest

When cover is marginal, base elevation matters more than any other number on a resort page. Here are Tahoe's resorts ranked by how high the bottom of the hill sits.

A high base is a tendency toward earlier and more durable early-season cover, not a promise. Mt. Rose, at the top of this list, tends to open among the earliest in the basin. The resort's own site is the only source for what's open on a given day.

The December tradeoff

Two things collide in this month. The first stretch is often the quietest and cheapest skiing of the entire season, with a real chance the coverage is thin. The holiday stretch at the end is the busiest and priciest, with a much better chance the mountain has filled in.

If you can move your dates, early December is the value play and coverage risk is what you're paying with. If you're locked to the holidays, book lodging early and treat the lift ticket as a fixed cost you won't be negotiating down.
