How We Pick Which Resort to Send You To
Exactly what our recommendation engine looks at, how much each input counts, what it ignores, and where our money comes from. No black box.
It's a heuristic, and we'd rather you knew how it works
When you build a trip, we rank the Tahoe resorts and put one at the top. That ranking is a transparent scoring function, not machine learning and not a panel of experts. It adds and subtracts points based on a handful of inputs we can actually verify, and the resort with the most points wins. Your trip page says outright that it's a heuristic suggestion rather than a guarantee, and this page exists so you can check that claim rather than take it.
We're deliberate about this because the recommendation touches road and weather conditions, and those carry real safety consequences. A confident-sounding suggestion built on data we don't have would be worse than no suggestion at all.
What goes into the score, in order of influence
Roughly ranked by how much each one can move a resort. The first three decide most rankings.
- Forecast snowfall over the next three days. The single biggest positive input by a wide margin. If the weather service call fails, we score snow as unknown and skip it entirely rather than treating a failed request as zero snow.
- Terrain that matches the experience level you entered. We take the resort's published terrain-mix percentage for your level, multiply it by its published skiable acreage, and score the actual acres of terrain that suit you. If a resort publishes total size but no terrain split, we estimate from our own beginner rating and discount the result. If it publishes neither, we fall back to the rating alone, discount it hard, and tell you on the trip page that terrain stats are missing.
- Drive time from your lodging to the mountain. Every minute subtracts. A drive time we couldn't measure is penalised heavily on purpose, so a routing failure can never accidentally crown a far-away resort. Anything beyond roughly two and a half hours takes an extra hit, because at that point it isn't a day trip.
- Wind. A high-wind forecast subtracts, sharply at the top of the range, because wind closes upper-mountain lifts and a closed summit lift changes which mountain you actually skied.
- Data quality. A resort carrying unverified stats loses points, and one carrying a specific caution loses more and shows you that caution word for word. A well-documented resort should beat a poorly-documented one on a close call.
- Your vibe selections, as small additive bonuses. Choosing 'just here to ski' amplifies the snow and size signals. Choosing 'nightlife' gives a bonus to a resort with night skiing. These are tuned to break ties, not to override weather or drive time.
- Lift count, purely as a tiebreaker, on the assumption that more lifts means shorter lines. It's capped low enough that it can never outweigh anything above it.
What it deliberately ignores
Ticket price is not an input. The engine never ranks a resort higher or lower because of what it costs, partly because Tahoe pricing is dynamic enough that we'd be scoring on a number that isn't real. We show you the ticket notes and let you weigh them.
Crowds are not an input, because there is no crowd data we trust. Neither is live lift status, lesson or rental availability, or live parking availability, and that last one matters: there is no public real-time availability feed for any Tahoe resort lot. Anyone claiming to show you open spaces is guessing.
Our 1–5 beginner rating is a smaller input than most people assume. It's mainly used as an estimator when a resort doesn't publish its terrain split, because published acreage of real beginner terrain is better evidence than a rating we assigned by hand. A large mountain with a lot of genuine beginner acreage can and does outrank a small hill with a friendlier rating.
Lodging areas are ranked by a separate function with different weights. There, drive time dominates, and it dominates harder if you tell us proximity is what you care about. Each character vibe you pick that matches an area adds a fixed bonus, 'just here to ski' adds a capped bonus for total nearby skiable acreage, and an area with an unmeasurable drive sorts to the bottom rather than being treated as free.
How we make money, and where it does and doesn't touch this

No resort pays us for placement, and nothing in the scoring function above references money in any form. The resort ranking is the same whether we earn a cent from your trip or not.
The lodging list is where money does shape what you see, so here's the honest version: our curated stays are limited to properties we can actually earn a commission on. It's a filtered list, not a neutral survey of every bed in Tahoe, and we'd rather say that plainly than let it read as comprehensive. The resort data, elevations, parking policies, and safety contacts have no commercial filter on them at all.
Questions about the ranking
Why did it pick a mountain I've never heard of?
Usually drive time or terrain fit. A closer mountain with real terrain for your level beats a famous one two hours further away, especially for a beginner. Your trip page lists the specific reasons for the pick, and you can override it and choose any resort you want.
Does the top pick change day to day?
Yes, and it should. Forecast snow and wind are inputs, so the same trip parameters can produce a different ranking as the forecast moves. If it never changed, it wouldn't be using the weather.
Can I just pick my own resort?
Yes. Choose any mountain and the rest of the trip builds around it, and your trip page notes that you chose it rather than us. The recommendation is a starting point, not a gate.
What if the data is wrong?
It happens, and we'd rather hear it. Every resort figure carries a source and a verification date in the codebase, and corrections get applied at the data layer so every page using that number fixes itself at once.
