Sun Protection at Altitude: The Most-Skipped Tahoe Gear
Tahoe skiing happens at altitude, on a surface that throws sunlight back at your face. Sunscreen and SPF lip balm are the most-skipped items in the bag.
Nobody drives four hours to Tahoe worrying about sunscreen. It is February, it is 25 degrees in the parking lot, and the whole thing feels like a summer problem. Then you take the goggles off in the lodge at 3 p.m. and there is a pale raccoon mask staring back at you from the bathroom mirror, with a burn line running along your jaw where nothing was protecting anything.
Sunburn at altitude happens fast, and the cold does a good job of hiding it while it happens. This is the cheapest, lightest, most-skipped item on our packing list at /gear, and the one people most regret.
How high you are actually skiing
Every mountain in the Tahoe basin sits well above the elevation most visitors live at, and the summits are higher again. These are the six highest summits in our resort data.

Elevations follow each resort's own published figures, held in our resort data and updated there rather than here. The point of the table is not the ranking: there is no low-elevation option in Tahoe, so no resort choice gets you out of this.
Why snow makes it worse
Two effects stack. You are higher up than you spend most of your life, and you are standing on a white surface that reflects a large share of the UV back at you. Our gear notes put snow reflection as high as 80 percent, which is why ski burns land in strange places: under the chin, up inside the nostrils, the underside of the ears, and the exposed strip between the bottom of the goggles and the top of a neck gaiter.
It also explains the classic first-day lips. Wind-burned, sun-cracked lips are miserable, they last the whole trip, and there is no fixing them once they happen.
The routine that actually works
- Apply in the car, before you get out. Once you are in gloves at the top of a lift, you are not doing it.
- Cover the places you would not think of: under the chin and jaw, the underside of the nose, the ears, and the neck between collar and gaiter.
- Keep the lip balm in an outside jacket pocket, not in the bag in the car. If reapplying it costs you a trip down, it will not happen.
- Reapply at lunch. That is the natural break, gloves are already off, and it splits the day roughly in half.
- Wear the goggles all day, not just when it is bright. Our gear list treats UV protection as their primary function, not a bonus on top of visibility.
- On the highest-exposure days, let the balaclava do some of the work. Fabric is the one form of coverage that does not sweat off.
Sun questions
Does this really matter in January?
Yes, and January is when it is easiest to forget. The sun sits lower in the sky, but the elevation and the snow underneath you do not change with the calendar. March and April catch more people simply because it feels warm enough that you would expect to notice.
Stick or lotion?
Both are on our list. A stick goes on with cold hands without making a mess, which is what you want at the top of a lift. A lotion covers more ground faster before you leave the car. The right one is whichever you will actually reapply.
Do I need anything for my lips specifically?
An SPF lip balm, kept somewhere you can reach with gloves on. Regular balm handles the wind but not the sun, and on snow you are getting both.
