Truckee is a historic railroad town that turned into a mountain-local hub, and it reads that way. Brick storefronts downtown, a food scene that punches well above the town's size, and the general feeling of a place people actually live rather than visit. The transcontinental railroad and the Donner Party are both baked into the history here.
The practical case for Truckee is geography. It sits right on I-80, which gives it the best access of any base to the most resorts per mile. If your ideal trip is a different mountain every day rather than a week of lift lines at one, this is the base built for it.

Is Truckee a good base for a first Tahoe trip?
It's a strong one if you want to sample mountains, because several sit close together with a real beginner hill among them. It's a weaker one if you pictured stepping out of your room onto a lakefront.
Is it cheaper than the lakefront areas?
It varies by property and season more than by town, so we won't put a number on it. Use the nightly budget filter on /stays with the Truckee area selected and compare against the lakefront areas directly.
Do I need to drive over Donner Summit?
Only for the mountains west of town. Northstar and Palisades are reached without it. In a storm the summit corridor is the part of the plan most likely to change, so keep a mountain on the east side as your backup.
What's there to do in the evening?
Downtown Truckee's restaurants are the main draw and the reason a lot of repeat visitors base here. It isn't a nightlife town; it's a dinner town.
